There's been a proliferation of Oscar-centric movie awards blogs over the past few years, and today, Awards Hell becomes one of them. Before I jump right in, I figured I'd write this intro letting you know what you're in for; consider this my "About" page.
Why should you read this blog? Glad you asked...
I've been doing this a while. Despite a relatively late start in this particular year, I'm not jumping on a bandwagon. I've been an obsessive follower of movie awards races since A Beautiful Mind (ugh) won Best Picture in 2001, and I make a set of predictions (two or three sets, to be more accurate) for both Oscar nominations and Oscar winners every year. So far my best performance was in 2003, when I correctly predicted 21 of the 24 winners. (I thought The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King would only win nine of its eleven categories, but it swept them all. Plus, I got Best Documentary Short wrong.)
Daily coverage. I'll bring you the latest news multiple times every day, at least five days a week. While I was trolling around for other good awards blogs in preparation for this site, I saw that the vast majority of them averaged about one update a week, disappeared for months at a time, and haven't posted since August or earlier. Not here.
Year-round coverage. Obviously, in the months leading up to the Oscars, this blog will be very Oscar-centric; they're the biggest movie awards out there. But the goal is to make this a blog for film enthusiasts in general. That means from March through August -- typically the "off" months of the Oscar year -- I'll be covering film festivals (Cannes, Tribeca, et al), plus the can't-ignore summer movies, all with an eye toward whether any of them are, or will be, award-worthy.
I'm independent. Most of the big Oscar blogs have gone corporate, amusingly enough. Go to the L.A. Times website and you'll find Gold Derby. The New York Times has Carpetbagger. Entertainment Weekly has Oscar Watch. The Hollywood Reporter has Gold Rush. And Variety has Award Central. And those are just the big ones. By contrast, I'm just a movie lover on the outside looking in, just like most of you. Feel free to leave as many comments as you want and make this as much of a dialogue-driven blog as possible.
I'm a writer, not a kid in a basement. I contribute to two other sites in the DailyPixel network: this site's parent, Hell.ca, and DailyLost.com. I also write for TheCinemaSource.com. I'll try to keep stream-of-consciousness rambling to a minimum, use impeccable grammar, and actually write stuff that's entertaining to read.
I hope you enjoy reading Awards Hell!
