'Up' is Awesome, But Please Resist the Oscar Talk

up.jpg

Every year, Pixar turns out another spectacular movie, and every year, people start talking it up for a Best Picture nomination -- the first for an animated film since Beauty and the Beast got the nod in 1991 (and the second ever).

But it doesn't happen. Instead, it's nominated for a bunch of songs, Best Animated Feature, and maybe Best Original Screenplay, and then -- except in the case of Cars, which wasn't that great -- it wins Animated Feature.

Up was just released to raving, year's-best-yet reviews (duh) and won the weekend (duh) with around $68 million (on a par with other Pixar releases). Another out-and-out winner (duh).

I don't mean to temper the excitement. I'm sure it's a great film, and I'm excited about catching it this week. I'm just saying: it's not going to get nominated for Best Picture, so don't even go there.
