Roger Ebert: Honorary Member of the Directors Guild

Roger Ebert's my favorite film critic. Yeah, I know, he's everybody's favorite film critic. But his reviews are entertaining and informative, and the man is absurdly prolific -- even after his health problems that left him in the hospital for the better part of the year and have currently rendered him unable to speak out loud.

When I first discovered my obsession with movies early in high school, I poured over his movies reviews online -- would literally spend hours sitting there and reading them. Movies I'd seen, movies I hadn't seen, movies I'd never heard of. It's amazing how much you can learn just from doing that.

According to the Associated Press, the Directors Guild of America has just made him an honorary lifetime member:

"From the blockbuster to the tiny independent film, Roger Ebert has devoted his career to sharing his love of film with generations of moviegoers," says guild President Michael Apted. "In doing so, he's kept directors on their toes for more than 40 years."

Ebert will receive the honor at a January 31st dinner. Congratulations to him.
