Paul Giamatti's 'Cold Souls' Makes the Internet Rounds

Cold Souls was one of the few success stories at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Starring Paul Giamatti as an actor named Paul Giamatti, it's a quirky sci-fi movie that got pretty good reviews and was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

The movie is set to open in limited release on August 7th, which is a bit strange -- it's too early for the film to make a sincere Oscar push. Maybe Goldwyn figured they'd get a jump on the competition, but...that never really works.

Of course, since they've seen the film and I haven't, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what type of product they have on their hands. "Quirky sci-fi" doesn't really go over well at the Oscars anyway, unless it's the Original Screenplay category (see: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). And first-time feature writer/director Sophie Barthes has no track record; she's cut her teeth on two shorts and that's it.

All that said, I like the look of this thing a lot -- that poster is really awesome -- although, ask yourself after you watch the trailer: why doesn't Paul Giamatti just play a fictional character? The fact that it's "him" seems to be adding nothing to the story.
