11:02: It's hilarious how long the night is compared with how rushed the ending is. As expected, Slumdog takes the night. Biggest surprise: Winslet for Best Actress. My favorite surprise: Colin Farrell. Best (serious) speech: Mickey Rourke. Goodnight, everyone!
10:51: The underdogs are really taking this: Colin Farrell, Kate Winslet, and now Rourke. Langella or Penn could've easily won, but now Rourke's in prime position for an Oscar (although I'd say Penn is still the frontrunner). Rourke's speech is surprisingly good, although the censors are probably killing themselves over Darren Aronofsky's hilarious flip-off.
10:44: People walking to the stage has taken up about half the running time.
10:40: Kate Winslet wins both?! Saved the biggest surprises of the night for near the end, apparently. She's just as baffled as everybody else, but congratulations to her.
10:37: Why the &$@#($ did they show a scene from near the end of Slumdog Millionaire?
10:30: I thought In Bruges might steal Best Picture - Musical/Comedy away from Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but it was not to be. Vicky's a very solid movie -- but, meh, they got the producer to give the speech. Zzz...
10:24: Colin Farrell! Yes! I didn't think he had a shot, but In Bruges was one of my top five favorite films this year. Hopefully people will rent it now out of curiosity. Good speech, but like all of them, rambling. (By the way, Sandra Bullock henceforth joins the "unexpected stand-up comic" club along with Don Cheadle.)
10:17: A little strange that Sigourney Weaver's introducing a Revolutionary Road clip right after Slumdog won Director (and earlier Screenplay). Already feels like a consolation recognition.
10:14: Were Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman drunk? (Yes.) Danny Boyle, whoo!
10:08: I give Spielberg's speech a B. Well-spoken but not very cohesive, and about a minute too long.
10:00: Terrific Steven Spielberg montage after a long stretch of boring categories. That little kid in the Empire of the Sun clip? Christian Bale.
9:20: Simon Beaufoy just one for Slumdog Millionaire. Looks a lot like the beginning of a sweep.
9:10: Just occured to me that they aired clips from the nominated movies during the Best Song presentation, but they're not showing clips from the acting nominees. I know it's a length consideration, but there are better ways to shorten the show.
8:59: Extremely classy speech from Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan on behalf of Heath Ledger. Although that clip from the movie just made me want to watch it again instead of finishing this.
8:43: Congrats to Sally Hawkins -- whom the organizers obviously weren't expecting to win, given that her table was about two miles away from the stage.
8:36: Once again, Ricky Gervais proves likely to be the funniest person of the night. Although again, Cheadle was pretty darn good.
8:30: Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto's intro to TV Actress was a set up without a punchline. They talk briefly about Star Trek and then...introduced the nominees.
8:29: I wonder if the uber-serious list of TV actors are pissed about their award being introduced by Hayden Panettiere and Zac Efron.
8:26: Really curious how prepared Don Cheadle was giving that speech, and whether or not he was the one who wrote it. Either way, hilarious -- he's one of the few celebrities to actually look natural talking in front of a crowd, oddly.
8:20: Miss Golden Globe? Uh what? Well, congrats, Rumer Willis, you stood there and smiled really well.
8:08: Whoo! I was right about Springsteen winning for The Wrestler. "This is the only time I'm going to be in competition with Clint Eastwood, that's for sure." Nice opener.
8:07: Clint Eastwood is the man. Feels a little strange to have him sandwiched between two kiddie movies in the Best Song category.
8:04: Well, I was wrong about one of my only risky predictions, Viola Davis over Kate Winslet. First award of the night. Go figure. Winslet's win is great but her speech is totally by-the-numbers.
