'Inglourious Basterds' Does $38 Million

It got a lot of bad reviews at Cannes. The New York Times ran a story about how if it failed, it would basically bankrupt The Weinstein Company. But when the time came, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds scored a massive $38 million debut in the U.S.

Depending on exactly how much it drops off next weekend, chances are very good that it'll break the $100 million mark. A nice comeback for Tarantino, after Grindhouse. (Robert Rodriguez didn't do quite so well: Shorts flopped badly.)

What does this mean for Oscars? A decent amount, actually. If it had the "failure" stigma attached to it, Christoph Waltz -- who managed to win Best Actor at Cannes for his role as a Nazi -- might've had a hard time making it on the Best Supporting Actor nomination list. Now, he's safely one of the major contenders. Not a sure thing -- we've got the entire fall season for five buzzier actors to come along -- but as of now, a major contender.
