The Washington D.C. Film Critics Association just announced their award winners. Never knew there was a D.C. Film Critic Association? There's one in pretty much every city, and they all have their own awards. The announcements are almost as frequent an occurrence in December and January as critic Top 10 lists.
Anyway, according to D.C...

ART DIRECTION
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I have no idea why they have an Art Direction category and no other tech categories, but it's a small consolation to Benjamin Button. The clear winner is obviously Slumdog Millionaire, but Rosemarie DeWitt got a big boost here too in terms of her Supporting Actress Oscar prospects. (She's the Rachel in Rachel Getting Married, by the way.)
As much as I liked Slumdog Millionaire, I thought Patel was one of the weakest things about it, but any further recognition he gets will also be in "breakthrough" categories -- he doesn't have a shot at an Oscar nomination.
One more strange thing: Let the Right One In wins best foreign film? It's gotten good reviews, but it's a vampire genre film. I would hope The Class, a fascinating portrayal of an English teacher and his class in a city school in France, gets more recognition.

Well, you haven't seen "Let the right one in", thats for sure, if you call it a vampire genre film. This is a genre bender piece of art, not a traditional vampire movie. It's build on character, character and character. Think Ingmar Bergman directing horror. This is first of all an amazingly acted love story between two preteens, then a very horrific and realistic coming of age drama. And yes, one of them is a vampire.
