Chicago Film Critics: Wall-E and Slumdog

Roger Ebert's the biggest critic on the Chicago scene and usually tends to influence the outcome of the Chicago Film Critics Association winners: it was one of the only groups to award Crash Best Picture instead of Brokeback Mountain.

This year, Ebert went and alphabetized his list, so without a leader to turn to, the Chicagoans awards Wall-E (which Ebert only gave three and a half stars) Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, and Original Score. Slumdog Millionaire nabbed Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Most Promising Performer (Dev Patel).

The full list (from In Contention):

Best Picture: “WALL-E”
Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”
Best Actress: Anne Hathaway, “Rachel Getting Married”
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”
Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet, “The Reader”
Best Original Screenplay: Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon, “WALL-E”
Best Adapted Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Foreign Language Film: “Let the Right One In”
Best Documentary: “Man On Wire”
Best Animated Feature: “WALL-E”
Best Cinematography: Wally Pfister, “The Dark Knight”
Best Original Score: Thomas Newman, “WALL-E”
Most Promising Performer: Dev Patel, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Most Promising Director: Tomas Alfredson, “Let the Right One In”

Again, despite all the wins it's getting, Wall-E is still not a serious contender for Best Picture. Pixar movies with more juice than Wall-E -- Finding Nemo and The Incredibles -- both failed to score Picture nominations, so Wall-E won't, either.

But a Best Original Screenplay nomination? Very much in the running.
