BAFTA Nominees Announced

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTA -- also known as "The British Oscars" -- just announced their nominations. I'll give you the surprises right off the bat, followed by the full list:

-Amy Adams was nominated for Doubt but Viola Davis wasn't. Many people are thinking Amy Adams might not get nominated for an Oscar because everybody will vote for Davis instead, but this might change that logic.

-The Dark Knight received nine nominations but was shut out of Best Film and Best Director (even more surprising given that Christopher Nolan is indeed British).

-The Reader nabbed a Best Film nominaton over Knight and Doubt.

-Freida Pinto was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Slumdog Millionaire; Dev Patel was nominated in the Best Actor category. (For the Oscars, he's being campaigned in the Best Supporting Actor category.)

-Brad Pitt and Brendan Gleeson were nominated in the Supporting Actor category (for Burn After Reading and In Bruges, respectively) over presumed Oscar lock Josh Brolin (for Milk).

-Similarly, Taraji P. Henson (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) was left off the list of Best Supporting Actresses in favor of Pinto and Tilda Swinton (who was nominated for Burn After Reading and not Benjamin Button).

One statistic that wasn't a surprise: the two most-nominated films were Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with 11 nominations each.
